Here are my tips to you in becoming a HGM!
-Don't be overwhelmed! The amount of "green" information out there can be a bit much to absorb! Take a step back and figure out where you want to start-what is most important to you RIGHT NOW?! Create a plan! Do you want to start replacing your household cleaners or do you want to start with what your feeding your family? Maybe you simply want to remember to bring your own bags to the grocery store? (I sometimes have a problem with this one!) Don't feel like you NEED to "green" everything all at once-baby steps ladies-baby steps!
-Do your research! There are many books and articles available to help steer you in the right direction to create the environment that works for you. Spend a bit of time at the library and skim through the books that look appealing to YOU. My personal favorite is Healthy Child, Healthy World. Others that I have benefited from are, Green Goes with Everything and Green Babies, Sage Moms. The internet is an endless source of information but if you're anything like me, it's very easy to get distracted and off task.
- Know your community! Does your city/town have a local farmers market? If you're not sure, go to www.localharvest.org. My playgroup goes strawberry picking (or whatever is in season) at a local farm-it's a great way to get the kids involved too! Make friends with your local health food stores. They usually have special discount days or special events to show off a new product and/or recipe. Take advantage of the free knowledge and don't be afraid to ask questions-there is a lot to learn!
-Talk about it! Have you ever realized the more you talk about something the more you learn? Next time you are with other moms ask them, "What type of cleaning products do you use? Have you ever made your own? Where do you grocery shop? Do you go to farmer's markets? What do your kids like to eat?" Everyone is so quick to compare their childrens milestones, why not compare their environments?
-Have fun! When you make something fun, it doesn't seem like work! Have your kids help you sort through the recycling bins or pick out colorful fruits and vegetables. Even better, plant a garden! You can even make your own finger paint or organic brownies! Once you become comfortable with your new lifestyle, the possibilites are endless!
-Be confident! Remember, a little goes a long way and making small changes is better than making none at all! Stand tall and be proud knowing that whatever you choose to do, you are doing your best to create a better environment for your family. After all, you are a Hot Green Mama!
